The Outer Banks… a thin, windswept strip of sand clinging to the edge of the Atlantic. I grew up here in the 1970s, when this place was still wild and untamed — and now I’ve come back to see what’s changed and what hasn’t.

In this introduction to my Outer Banks series, I’ll share where this journey will take us — from Colington Island and Manteo to Ocracoke, Hatteras, and beyond. We’ll explore quiet fishing villages, forgotten history, shipwrecks, lighthouses, and the culture that’s made the Outer Banks one of the most fascinating coastlines in America.
