When I fully retired in July 2022, I imagined a quiet life, perhaps dipping into consulting. Instead, I embarked on a transformative journey that redefined my purpose. It began with a trip to Baja California Sur, Mexico, where the peninsula’s rugged Pacific cliffs, serene Sea of Cortez shores, and historic Franciscan missions stirred my soul. In Magdalena Bay, watching gray whales migrate, I felt a profound connection to life’s rhythms—a moment that reshaped how I see myself.
This awakening led me to create Adventures with Duncan, my YouTube channel, where I’ve shared over 160 videos, nearly a third capturing Baja’s magic. With over 13,000 subscribers and a monetized channel, I’ve embraced storytelling, videography, and editing as new facets of my identity. Beyond Baja, I’ve documented motorcycling adventures, scuba diving explorations, and a poignant trip to Cuba, tracing Hemingway’s legacy and the artistry of Viñales Valley tobacco fields. Each video is a chapter of my evolving story.
This journey taught me four truths. First, documenting my travels builds a legacy I’ll treasure. Second, age is no barrier to reinvention—I’ve learned scriptwriting and YouTube’s algorithm with a beginner’s curiosity. Third, authenticity trumps a single niche, reflecting my eclectic passions. Finally, true joy lies in pursuing what ignites your soul.
